Safer to stay out of it?
It may be hard, complicated, difficult emotionally to talk about the bias.
But, it will be harder, more complicated, and more difficult emotionally, if we don't.
Not a single problem was solved by 'not talking about it'. So, let's get talking.
No matter your background, conversations about bias can feel overwhelming. When we feel unsure about what to say, we assume that it is better to say nothing at all. "Safer to stay out of it".
But think of it this way; the situation you walk past without comment, is the one you uphold.
As a parent, I know that I have a matter of seconds to oppose a racist comment that my child hears before they accept it as okay and normal. The same is true of teachers, leaders and managers but also with your families and friends.
Fear is often at the root of silence.
I feel it in writing this email, I fear that I am not black enough or that I don't have enough letters behind my name. But I will speak anyway. I know that what I must share can make small but positive changes that can grow into bigger changes.
I hope that each micro-improvement can be a remedy to micro-aggression.
