Is your self-awareness getting in the way of your actions?

start with yourself

“If you can not measure it, you can not improve it.”

- Lord Kelvin- Physicist (Also repeated by Peter Drucker more than 100 years late)

I totally agree!

I heard this phrase a lot in corporate life. This concept of studying the thing you want to improve, is the basis of many business development and performance initiatives, the basis of change programmes and development of new systems. So why do we suddenly forget this when it comes to our own ways of thinking and behaving.

Let’s zoom in on ourselves.

  • How are you thinking?

Do you think fast or slowly? Do you challenge your own ideas? Do you notice the triggers to your negative thoughts? What is interesting to you? What passes by without getting much of your attention?

  • How are you feeling?

Do you feel well in your body? Where is there discomfort? What does stress feel like in your body and mind? What triggers a stressful feeling? What triggers a glimmer (joyful moment)?

We can improve the future by being more present

There is more to self-awareness than being focused on ourselves. We have an impact on the people and environment that we come in contact with every day.

We are all aware of the urgency of challenges such as climate change, population growth, resource depletion, and environmental impacts of our way of life. But how we are responding to these challenges. What are our own ways of thinking, what are our real beliefs and feelings and what are our own actions.

  • To take action we need to be fully present, grounded, alert, fearless and free.

  • To take action we need to be able to see the choices we make in every moment.

  • To take action we need to recognise and understand our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.

The way we think, and the values we hold are the reasons we act or don’t act. Developing more self-awareness can help us to better understand of ourselves, our actions, and how they impact the world around us. Self-awareness allows us to evaluate our lifestyles, behaviours, and priorities, and make changes like reducing our carbon footprint, producing less food waste, quitting that bad habit, spending more time with our loved ones.

We are interconnected so get connected to the person closest to you… YOU!

Who are you?

Where are you?

What do you want?

Check out this inspiring and very calming video about building more presence and self-awareness.

Here are some ideas about how to build
SELF AWARENESS:

1. Practice self-reflection: Take time each day to reflect on your thoughts, feelings, and actions. What motivated you during the day? What did you struggle with? What would you have done differently? Self-reflection is a powerful tool that can help you understand your own thought processes and behaviours.

2. Get feedback from others: Whether it's from friends, family, or coworkers, feedback can be a valuable source of information about your own behaviour and how others perceive you. Be open to constructive criticism and use it as an opportunity to learn and grow.

3. Try new experiences: Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone can be a great way to learn more about yourself. Trying new experiences can help you identify your strengths and weaknesses, and build confidence in your abilities.

4. Meditate and practice mindfulness: Meditation and mindfulness practices can help quiet your mind and allow you to connect with your thoughts and feelings on a deeper level. Regular practice can help you become more aware of your emotions and thought patterns.

5. Journaling: Writing down your thoughts and feelings can help you get a better understanding of them. Maybe you would rather draw or doodle. Find the medium that suits you.

I end with my favourite Michael Jackson quote

“If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and then make a change.”
